Origin: On November 10, 2007, approximately 14 runners met on a cold morning in a local coffee house discussing with admiration the running clubs flourishing in other communities. The runners debated whether there was sufficient interest in Northeastern South Dakota to operate a running club. The result was a unanimous decision to form an organization dedicated to promote running and runners. A week later, the Aberdeen Area Running Club, a not for profit corporation was formed. Today, still in its first year of existence, the club is actively supporting area runners and sponsoring events as diverse as area races, the 2008 USATF championships for both North and South Dakota, and a social hour with world famous marathoner, Dick Beardsley. The club is comprised of nearly one-hundred area runners.
Objectives:
- The prime objective of the association is the promotion and encouragement of running and the education of the public to its benefits.
- This association may hold championships, races on the road or track, lectures, fun runs, other educational activities, demonstrations, clinics and social events, print and publish books, magazines and newsletters, make awards, and do all such other things as may be conducive to the encouragement of running.
- Other objectives are to engage in community activities, to publicize by appropriate means the benefits of running as a means of physical fitness.
