I was not impressed! I understand they had to change the course, but it wasn’t a great change. The starting spot was very crowded. 5K runners were jammed in and the 5K started so late it was really hot running on the blacktop with no shade. I heard the early racers loved it because it was shady. Wait an hour and then do that again! The streets weren’t wide enough at the start and we actually had spectators STANDING in the street that we had to run around. I hope next years race can be accomodated within town and not run out the blacktop. The post race activities we obviously “provided” by the bars on the corners. Too bad there wasn’t enough water for those of us that can’t quite stomach a beer so quickly after a run. I’ll wait and see what happens for 2012. I hope a change of venue at least…
This is a very well organized race. With a 8k, 5k and a one mile youth run and a kids run there is something for everyone. Ideal for families. Kids can learn the running game and enjoy a good post race atmosphere afterwards. Runners vary from the elite to three- and four-year-olds. It was fun to watch the kids race finish as well as the parade of wagons and dogs that followed the last race. Course is very well protected with no cars or traffic. The running surface left much to be desired as the streets are in very poor condition. Unfortunately, the $12000 in prize money has been restricted to US citzens only, which has effectively excluded the fine Kenyen runners who are not US citzens. The volunteers do a fine job with water stops and the area residents came out in force to welcome the running crowd. The refreshments post race were well done. In addition, the ” rock the ramp” offered beer and pizza and live band to those over 21. The awards were held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel where additional refreshment included punch, cheese, ham, crackers and fresh fruit, etc. As one can see you cant run far enough to wear off all these offerings but it was fun to try!! All in all, this is one of the best races in Iowa and deserves a spot on your planning calendar for next year. There are many races over the fouth but this is the one to do.
Great race. I’m glad the rain held out this year compared to last which made the post race activities more fun. It’s amazing to see all the elite runners from all over the country racing here in Cedar Rapids. The course is mainly a small incline uphill until half way where it turns into a small decline downhill. I like how the streets are completely closed to traffic and many volunteers were there to help make the race a success. Everything is well organized from the packet pickup, course route, porta potties, and post race food. My favorite is the fresh watermelon and banannas at the end, They also had cookies, granola bars, gatorade, water, pizza, and beer. The only thing I wish they had was an extra small t-shirt option for tiny women runners like myself. Other than that this is one of the best races in Iowa!
It was raining lightly during the race but not too much for it to be distracting. The race is always well organized and they have a great post race party with the usual spread along with pizza and beer. Because of the weather, the lines were also short for the good food. Some call the route hilly because of the climb on the out portion. I personally don’t think it’s that bad. You also get the downhill for a fast finish on the way back. Nice to see the route back on the island after the floods last year.
Thanks for a great race.
