I’d like to share some race etiquette advice that’s instructive for new runners (and a great reminder for the seasoned vets):
- Pay for your spot at the start line. Don’t be a “race bandit”. Race entry fees may seem expensive to some, but the entry fee is often put to good use. Races provide a safe route, timing devices, goodie bags, post race food and lots of support. Race fair and pay before you run…
- Line up according to your pace. This is especially important in larger races with a narrow route. It can be very frustrating for faster runners to be stuck behind slower runners or walkers. Be realistic and line up properly. As an added bonus, starting from the back of the pack ensures you’ll be the one passing other runners, which can be a great energy boost.
- Try to leave room for others. I love running with a partner but make sure you leave enough room for someone to run around you if necessary. Better yet, encourage other runners as they pass by telling them good job. You just might receive the same when you’re the one doing the passing.
- Water stops can be tricky. Slow down at the drink stations and be aware of others. My favorite trick is to wait until the end of the water station and grab the last cup. Then I can drink and walk without worrying about getting in the path of others.
- Keeping moving past the finish line. Most runners sprint to the finish and need some room to decelerate. It’s best to keep moving past the finish line to leave room for other runners behind you. Then you can avoid collisions and worry about what’s important…the post-race food!
- Take your share of post race food. The post race spread of food is free to runners but it doesn’t entitle you to stock up the cupboards. Nothing is more disappointing than finishing behind others and missing out on post race snacks.
Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the race!

Don’t forget to say ‘Thank You!”
Hear ye, hear ye! Might add on “take your share of post race food” also goes for water…nothing more frusrating that getting to the finish line & no water!!
