I ran with a team of runners never knew before and they were a great group! Serious to silly times for all. Given first year experiences for organizers overall they did a good job. It would be fun to have more teams join the event. There is no other run experience like this in Iowa!
PROS
Great support from relay Iowa volunteers. They loved being there.
Got to run across the state with other people and get to know them
No other run like this in Iowa.
Roads weren’t too hard to follow the majority of the way.
Breakfast in Jewell Iowa.
Celebration at end was nice in Dubuque.
CONS
Not many people signed up the first year and you were really all alone at night
Waterloo route was scary and dangerous, but I think they changed it this year
I was part of a team in the summer of 1975 that ran from keokuk to sioux falls, which i believe was over 400 miles. We raised money for MS. We started with 10 and ended with 5 running the last 3/4 day. We completed the distance in less than 48 hours. Most of us were either in high school or just out of high school. A couple went on to be All-Americans and state champions. I believe we lived on Gatorade and Snickers! I have done 2 other relays, Hood to Coast and Ragnar and neither were as much fun as the one across Iowa.
Our team of 6 had a great time and made it all the way to Dubuque. We were a little unsure since it was the first year and considering the distance there were lots of questions. But overall it turned out great. Hopefully this race will continue. Not many can say they ran across Iowa!
